About Float Training

What if I told you that most of your float problems actually weren’t about your float at all? What if I told you that whether you have an angle load, a straight load or a truck is also irrelevant? What if I told you that treats and food to lure your horse in, whips and lunge ropes behind the bum were all just band aids that only temporarily fix the real issues?

Would you be surprised?

Floating. What a terribly stressful event for many people and horses. It doesn’t need to be like this! I can help you.

Floating issues can be fixed in a few ways. Many people opt for repetition. On and off, on and off. Outing after outing. This will definitely help. The more your horse does it, the better they will get. ASSUMING that you don’t have any set backs and scares along the way. If your horse slips or knocks it’s head you may well go back to square one again.

Most importantly floating issues can be about timing. Have you learnt to read your horses body language so that you understand what they’re feeling, whether they’re ready to load, whether they’re anxious or stubborn or for some, even terrified? Do you know when to ask for forward, to step them back, let them rest and when to ask for more? Can you tell when they’ve shut down, when they’re not listening or when they’re simply outsmarting you?

Let me help you gain a really thorough understanding of floating by showing you the best ways you can help your horse to feel more comfortable. After all, outings should be fun for both you and your horse.

Floating

It can be the most frustrating feeling, not knowing how long your horse will take to get on a float or even if they will get on.

You don’t know how long to allow before you go to riding club, your show and generally run your friends late on that trail ride you’ve been wanting to attend.

I’ve got news for you!

Getting your horse on the float isn’t actually just about the float at all!

Sounds weird doesn’t it? Of course it is, you think. But nope, it really has more to do with the relationship you’ve built with your horse and their ability to trust you and follow you as their handler anywhere you wish to go. Getting on the float or even in the back door of your house, it’s irrelevant. As long as your horse sees you as their trusted human then life gets easier!

Practice

So how do we put this into practice?

Let me show you with a floating session for you and your horse. Your float or mine. There’s nothing quite so satisfying as a horse that is so keen to get in the float that they load themselves.

It’s most important too that we also don’t let them rush out or for us to be in a hurry to shut the tail gate.

I’ve spent many years working with horses that simply don’t want to get on the float, and with persistence, patience and handling and much singing of the Hokey Pokey “You put your left leg in…..” I’ve had some wonderful success stories.
