My horses have been on holiday

My horses have been on holiday

And face it so have I

But the time has come to jump on again

And I can’t wait to fly!

He’s been eating all the grass

His tummy looks quite fat

His paddock mate has been chilling too

And they’re both quite happy with that

They run and buck and jump around

They’re quite a sight to see

The old one and the young one

Loving being free

The older one, he’s such a charm

I can just grab him from his rest

He never needs a working down

He truly is the best

It’s because he knows his job

And is actually rather enthused

He knows when we go on the float

We ride out to see the views

The younger one a different story

He really is rather green

The manners that I taught him before

Are nowhere to be seen

He’s bucking and a rearing

He looks fit and mighty fine

And no it doesn’t freak me out

I know he just needs some time

It’s not that he’s not respectful

Because he knows much better than that

It’s just that he’s enjoying being a horse

And sometimes he’s a brat

The older one is different

He comes up to the gate

Curious to see whether I’ve got food

Because I really am his mate

The younger one isn’t quite so sure

And sometimes buggers off

You’re not catching me today

He truly seems to scoff

But then when I go and snuggle

With the gentleman I know so well

The youngster comes up, inquisitive

And remembers how I smell

He may be kinda jealous

And comes up to sniff my hair

He’s gentle but he’s playful

And doesn’t want to share

So I grab both halters

So I don’t have to choose

And catch them both together

Well what have I got to lose?

So think again you silly knob

It’s like carrying shopping bags

You’re better off to take two trips

Than to try and lead both nags!

I try to lead them out the gate

But parked the float too tight

The young one rushes quickly

And gives the older one a fright

The older one has bite marks

All over his curvy bum

The young one totally carefree

Doesn’t care it’s what he’s done!

The older one is smarter

And knows to get out the way

He rushes through the lead rope

And the younger runs away

My eyes dart round quite quickly

To check on my surrounds

I realise very quickly

He cannot get out of the grounds

And so I let him run off free

Dragging on his rope

And put the older one on the float

Thinking Kel, you silly dope!

I decide to climb through the fence

The bottom strand is barbed

Of course I cut my leg on this

Why did it get this hard?

The young one’s running round and round

Looking fabulous I might add!

I need to catch the little 💩

Before it gets too bad

And so I try my groundwork trick

Of raising my right hand

I got the response I was hoping for

And he turns immediately and stands

I smile thinking “yes I’ve won”

My training’s done the trick

The young one has remembered

He’s really not that thick!

I lead him back towards the float

And make sure he listens well

Thinking if I’d led one at a time

It may not have gone to hell!

But with the older gentleman already in

The young is keen to float

He walks himself right on in

It’s now my time to gloat.

The young one has been on holidays

He’s been having a rest

So to remember after all that time

I have to say that I’m impressed!

So despite a few minor hiccups

I tow them both home happily

Thinking that in time the younger one

My best friend he will be.

The thing that I like the most

About this special two

Is how they’re both so willing

To do what they’re asked to do

They have both got willing spirits

And genuinely try to please

They’re gentle and they’re kind

Just like who I try to be

So while I’ve had one quite a while

The other is still quite new

They both are on the same training path

Thinking “How can I please you?”
